Cities on the Move… In the Field

Team Effort: Time goes by so quickly; it’s hard to believe we are already half way through our third season of Cities on the Move.
Thanks to everyone for helping make Cities on the Move possible. For those of you who didn’t catch the ‘behind the scenes’ episode, John Wiedenheft is our director. Danica Olson is great for filling in whenever we need a little extra help to shepherd guests to the right places or whatever needs getting done. Production and Engineering staff members Todd Ray, Stefan Olson and Tim Gassman are also always at the ready to help. Shirley Blake, KSMQ Business Manager is the ‘go to’ gal for anything. Suzi Stone, KSMQ Programming Manager makes sure we actually get on the air. Of course, the danger in starting to list people is that I will forget someone. Naturally, our CEO, Marianne Potter, drives the ship, and I appreciate her support of keeping Cities on the Move in the KSMQ line-up. It’s great to be part of such a dedicated team. Thanks to everyone who helps make Cities on the Move possible, we couldn’t do it without you!

Cities on the Move… In the Field

The Many Faces of Adoption I hope you will get a chance to tune in to the October 20th show. I knew that children of many ages were available for adoption, but I didn’t realize the many different adoption arrangements that existed today. From private, closed adoptions to a multitude of variations of contact with birth families, many people are working together for the best interests of the child. Maryls Ubben from New Horizons and WendyLee Raun from MN ADOPT have a wide range of resources for not only the adopting parents, but the birth parents as well. In the case of MN ADOPT, the children available for adoption are currently in foster homes. One piece that WendyLee shared with me was that now foster families are eligible when considering where to place children for final adoption. There is so much to know, it is great that we have agencies in the region that can help these precious children find permanent loving families.

Cities on the Move… In the Field.

Growing families Today we taped an interview for an upcoming segment of Cities on the Move that featured all the ways families can adopt children. There are several agencies that are located throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa that help families navigate all the options. Domestic or foreign; infant or older; private or open; birth placement or foster adoptions – adoption has many forms. Many of these organizations also provide services to the mothers who are considering placing their child with another family.
A couple of key points made by our guests illustrate how momentous this event is for everyone involved. It was also great to hear a mom, Nancy Jones, tell about how her and her husband Tom’s two adoptive children have bonded not only with their parents, but also each other. Every family has a different profile – it was fun to hear about how new families are formed through adoption.
After the show, several of us stood around visiting about the many families we knew who have been involved with an adoption. We realized there is seldom one path to a new family.
If you have a special event that has happened in your life, let us know. Chances are it would resonate with others in the region as well. We’d love to tell your story.
